A Court of Appeal judge and wife of the
former Minister of Information, Chief Nnia
Nwodo, Justice Roseline Oby Nwodo died
in a London hospital on Tuesday from a
cancer related ailment.
In what family members, Friday, described
as a double tragedy for the Nwodos, a
former Chairman of Nsukka Local
Government Area of Enugu State and a
cousin to the Nwodos from Leje, Nsukka,
Mr.John Nweze, also died on Wednesday
after he was hit by an undisclosed ailment.
Justice Nwodo, who was the daughter of the
late renowned Abagana Anambra state-
born industrialist, Chief Joe Nwankwu,
passed on after battling with cancer for a
long time in the London hospital.
The bereaved husband, Chief Nwodo could
not be reached on phone as he was said to
have travelled to London where his wife
died to make necessary arrangement ahead
of her funeral.
A family member, however, told Vanguard
that Justice Nwodo’s death came to them
as a shock because they had expected that
she would survive the ailment and return to
the country to continue with her job .
It was learnt that her health condition,
which she had battled for some time, got
worse about a month ago when she
travelled to United Kingdom to seek
medical attention but she could not survive
it as she reportedly gave up the ghost last
Tuesday.
Justice Nwodo was appointed a magistrate
in 1985 and she went on to hold several
positions in the judiciary including Chief
Magistrate Grade 2, Deputy Chief Registrar
(Enugu State High Court) and a Judge of
the Federal High Court (Port Harcourt).
She was appointed Justice of the Court of
Appeal in December 2007.
Her husband, Nnia, was Minister of
Information under the late head of state,
Sani Abacha.
However, as members of the large Nwodo
family were trying to overcome the shock of
their wife’s demise, their cousin, Mr. John
Nweze, also passed on Wednesday
throwing the entire family into deep
mourning.
Meanwhile, a formal announcement of the
deaths is expected to be made by the family
after the husband might have returned from
London.
The state Governor, Sullivan Chime,
yesterday, reacted to the death of Justice
Nwodo, expressing shock and sadness over
the development.
